St. Luke's United Methodist Church has a long and distinguished history. First known as Bethel Methodist, founded by the family of Reverend D.R.S. Rosebrough in 1875, the church was located at Barron and Prescott. In 1888, the church moved to Semmes and Southern and was renamed Buntyn Methodist Church. Then, in 1925, the church moved to its present location and became St. Luke's. The beautiful sanctuary, with its exquisite stained-glass windows, was built in 1930. Educational wings were added in 1948 and 1955. The Children's Building and Fellowship Hall were built in 1962. The latest addition was the Jack Henton Christian Life Building completed in 1994, which has added enormously to the church's possibilities for Christian ministry to the whole person. St. Luke's has a strong commitment to missions and its Outreach Ministry touches many lives. The church, committed to evangelism and Christian nurture, has an outstanding program of worship, music and Christian education. |
