Epistle for Sept. 30, 2008

September 29th, 2008 · No Comments

The Epistle for September 30th, 2008, is now available. From Pastor Mark’s Epistle:

PASTOR MARK’S EPISTLE

Dear Friends,

A faint hope or wish became part of our
Vision. Then, surprisingly and more swiftly than we
could have imagined, that potential step moved close
to reality.

How it reads in our official St. Luke’s Vision
adopted in 2007 is simply “Consider acquiring adjacent
properties.” Through an amazing sequence of
events, resources have emerged and a willingness expressed
by the owner for acquisition of the two parcels
to our immediate northeast on Midland Avenue.

This Sunday at 12:10 p.m. in the Chapel, our
Church Council will consider a proposal from our
Trustees to purchase the property, utilizing funds
from a generous bequest (Ernestine Moore estate).
If approved, a Design Team will be appointed to
recommend next steps. Two frequently mentioned
possibilities for utilization are more play space for
youngsters and more parking, especially in view of
the Hospitality Center plans.

Please be in prayer as these kinds of opportunities
continue to emerge. God bless!

In Service, …Pastor Mark

Epistle for Sept. 23, 2008

September 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

The Epistle for September 23rd, 2008, is now available. From Pastor Mark’s Epistle:

PASTOR MARK’S EPISTLE

Dear Friends,

We are blest to have a fine institution of higher
learning in our Memphis Conference of The United
Methodist Church. Named for a venerable missionary
and nurturing place of thousands of laity and
clergy, Lambuth University is a ministry we should
all admire and support.

We have an outstanding set of Lambuth alumni
in our congregation. Led by April Carpenter, they
will lay a prominent role in leading worship as we
celebrate Lambuth Sunday. Be alert, as we might
even have a surprise or two in store.

One of the great conceptions of wholesome
discipleship given us by John Wesley is his
well-balanced triad, “warm heart, willing hand,
illumined mind.” We should give thanks that over
many years Lambuth has stood for illumination of
the mind while producing warm-hearted, servinggiving
citizens gracefully and consistently.

Be part of our celebration!

In service, …Pastor Mark

Epistle for Sept. 16, 2008

September 15th, 2008 · No Comments

The Epistle for September 16th, 2008, is now available. From Pastor Mark’s Epistle:

PASTOR MARK’S EPISTLE

Dear Friends,

We at St. Luke’s are audacious in our desire to
reach the people of our community. With this exciting
cluster of events called “Community Days,” we
demonstrate how we are serious about this subject. We
hope you will participate and help spread the word,
especially including this coming Sunday’s annual
emphasis on “Bring a Friend”…

National research has shown an unmistakable
trend, also confirmed by the facts in United Methodism in
our own community in the Mid-South: When churches
are disconnected from their neighborhoods, they perish;
when they connect wholeheartedly and creatively, they
have a chance to thrive. We of St. Luke’s often speak of
our hope to “not just survive, but thrive.” This week is
one particular time when we can demonstrate tangibly
that we really mean it.

The spiritual underpinnings of this movement
are very, very clear — “Love the Lord with all your
heart, mind, soul and strength, and your neighbor as
yourself …”

This is the call. Will we answer?

In service, …Pastor Mark

†CALL to WORSHIP
In the presence of God the sea shall flee, the mountains shall skip like rams and
the hills like lambs.
We are bold to approach you and call you our God.
We recall the story of Noah and Your covenant not to destroy the earth by flood.
We recall how you parted the raging waters and led your children through
on dry land.
We remember the Presence of the Holy Spirit washing over us during our
baptism.
In our lives, we know and encounter your Almighty Presence.
Let us worship God!

Epistle for September 9th, 2008

September 8th, 2008 · No Comments

The Epistle for September 9th, 2008, is now available. From Pastor Mark’s Epistle:

PASTOR MARK’S EPISTLE

Dear Friends,

What exciting days at St. Luke’s! One manifestation
of this relates to our hopes for a new
Hospitality Center. Final drawings are nearly
complete, and our Trustees and Finance committees
will be meeting soon to attend to the question of how
to implement this project.

Meanwhile, we have tremendous news that
speaks to the question of how we can afford this new
step without a strain on our regular church budget.
A major bequest has come in. It is the second portion
from an estate, and in my judgment, it is large
enough for us to proceed with all due speed.

Please be in prayer for our committees in this
dynamic process, and be aware that we will eventually
have a Church Conference for everyone’s participation
in the decisions ahead. If you have early questions or
comments to share, please feel free to be in touch with
me or with our leader for this proposal, Susan Dacus.
God bless everyone!

In service, …Pastor Mark
