Dear Friends,
Even though I am an avid sports fan and devoted supporter of the U of M Tigers, I rarely speak or write about sports in connection with discipleship. After all, there is too much idolatry seeming to dominate our culture, directed toward movie stars, athletes, politicians, you name it….
ON THE OTHER HAND, I would be seriously remiss if I failed to lift up this week some of the very positive lessons flowing from the unique journey of Tiger basketball this season. No matter what happens in the rarefied atmosphere of the Final Four, let’s celebrate these implications…
- TEAMWORK: each person works for what is best for the whole team, not for individual glory;
- OVERCOMING ADVERSITY: we learn lessons from hard times, especially working through mistakes and bad choices;
- LIFTING UP THE ‘UNDERDOG’: believing in somebody who the world viewed as a ‘nobody’ is a truly Christ-like example.
Connecting with that last point, we should gratefully applaud folks like KEN BENNETT of Streets Ministries, who has joined with Coach Cal not only to be a “Team Chaplain,” but literally to get with, be with and stay with specific local Tigers, like ANDRE ALLEN and many others. THANKS should radiate from our hearts in these days of New Life, Eastertide …
